More than 250 delegates from around the world attended the ILAC IAF 2007 conference in Sydney recently
ILAC and IAF had chosen the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA) and the Joint Accreditation System for Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) as the hosts for the 2007 annual meetings.  The conference highlighted the 30 years since the inception of ILAC, and three decades of international work towards removing technical barriers to trade.

At a gala dinner held to mark the event, a signing ceremony for new signatories to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) and to the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) was held. The new signatories for ILAC were the Ente Costarricense De Acreditacion (ECA) Costa Rica and the Voluntary EMC Laboratory Accreditation Center INC. (VLAC), Japan, both for testing.

ILAC Secretary Annette Dever highlighted some of the many  outcomes from the conference:

The acceptance of the ILAC and International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) joint paper on Calibration and Measurement Capabilities  - a significant step forward in the coordination of this concept between ILAC and the BIPM; further progress in the work being undertaken to expand the scope of the ILAC MRA to include accredited Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers; and endorsement of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), during the World Conference on Doping in Sport in Madrid on 14 November 2007.

“This MoU reflects the close cooperation that has developed over a number of years between ILAC and WADA,” Ms Dever added.

Another important event was the signing of a tripartite MoU between ILAC, the International Organisation for Legal Metrology (OIML) and IAF. This MoU replaces the previous bipartite MoU between ILAC and OIML that was signed in 2006.

A full list of ILAC resolutions adopted during the ILAC General Assembly together with those adopted by ILAC and IAF during the Joint General Assembly can be found on this web site at http://www.ilac.org/ga_resolutions.html.

It wasn’t all hard work: Marketing and Communications Committee member Ian Roy said “Feedback from the conference showed most people also thoroughly enjoyed the social events on offer, including a visit from a koala, a bearded dragon and a diamond python; a ferry cruise in uncharacteristically rainy weather ; the gala dinner,  and a farewell function with spectacular views over Sydney in the Sky Lounge at Sydney Tower.”
